Anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression: Assistance for Ukraine and security for Germany

On 24 February 2022, Russian troops invaded Ukraine and inflicted inconceivable suffering on the country’s people. A year later, Putin’s bombs are still destroying cities and villages, killing people and tearing families apart.

And they are forcing many Ukrainians to leave their homes: Russia’s war of aggression has triggered the largest wave of refugees in Europe since the Second World War.

Since the war began, Germany has taken in and provided for more than one million Ukrainian refugees. This extraordinary joint effort of government and society has saved many lives, and it has shown a great deal of solidarity with Ukraine.

"One thing was clear to us from the very beginning: We will stand with Ukrainians. We will provide assistance where it is needed. This is a humanitarian imperative."
