The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community has called on the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) to work with the commission of historians on a research project to examine and reappraise the attack on the Israeli Olympic team in 1972 as well as the background and aftermath of the attack. The IfZ is setting up a special office to organise and provide support for this project.

The first project-related event took place in autumn 2023, around the time of the 51st anniversary of the attack. The work and findings of the research project will be documented transparently for the public, e.g. on the website www.aufarbeitung-olympia72.de/en.
