Responsibility for aviation security checks at Frankfurt airport to be transferred to Fraport AG as of 2023

type: press release , Date: 07 May 2021

Federal Police will remain responsible for security

On 1 January 2023, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community will transfer the responsibility for organising, funding, managing and implementing aviation security checks at Frankfurt airport to Fraport AG. The two sides concluded an agreement assigning this responsibility to the airport operator, which was signed this week.

Under the agreement, Fraport AG will also be responsible for procuring security equipment at Frankfurt airport and for calculating and charging aviation security fees to air carriers. This will help to relieve the Federal Police of administrative tasks, enabling them to focus on law enforcement-related security tasks.

In future, security checks at Frankfurt airport will be carried out by qualified professional staff on behalf of Fraport AG and under the supervision of the Federal Police. The employees serving in such roles will meet the regulatory requirements for their job and will be paid in accordance with collective wage agreements; this is ensured by a clause which binds both sides to comply with collective wage agreements.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community remains the supreme aviation security authority.
