Coronavirus: Temporary checks at the Austrian and Czech borders extended

type: press release , Date: 03 March 2021

Checks at the Austrian and Czech borders will continue until 17 March 2021

The temporary checks at Germany’s borders with Austria and the Czech Republic will continue initially until 17 March 2021.

The Czech Republic and the Austrian province of Tyrol (except for the district of Lienz, the municipality of Jungholz and the Rißtal valley within the municipalities of Vomp and Eben am Achensee) remain classified as areas of virus variants of concern.

Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer has therefore ordered that the temporary checks at the internal borders be continued, effective from 4 March up to and including 17 March 2021, based on Article 28 of the Schengen Borders Code in the version of Regulation (EU) 2016/399. This period of time is also in accord with Germany’s national measures to contain the spread of virus variants from areas of variants of concern.

The German authorities are closely monitoring the development of the pandemic. If the epidemiological situation improves, the checks at the internal borders could be discontinued before 17 March 2021.
