Federal Government reaffirms commitment to police training project in Afghanistan

type: press release , Date: 27 September 2019

Security of German police officers deployed in Afghanistan is top priority

Germany plans to continue its bilateral police training project in Afghanistan: in Masar e Sharif, the German Police Project Team (GPPT) is operating without restrictions, while in Kabul, the project is going ahead with a reduced number of staff and within the limits of the possible, following the attack on the “Green Village” on 2 September 2019.   The number of staff there will be gradually increased once the logistical prerequisites are met.

Speaking about the police training project, Interior Minister Seehofer said: “On the path to achieving permanent peace, security and stable governance, the Afghan government depends on our continued support. We will therefore continue this successful German-Afghan police project.”

The secondment of Federal Police officers as originally planned in the framework of the regular staff rotation was deferred last week for organizational reasons. The officers will, however, leave for Afghanistan in the foreseeable future. The decision was taken in agreement with the Federal Police.

Ten police officers are currently staying in safe accommodations on the premises of the German embassy and at the military part of the Kabul airport where they are continuing the project as far as possible. Plans for sending additional police officers to Kabul are under way.
