Easier access to government services for more people

Only one in ten Germans now uses the Internet to access e-government services. One reason is that far too few people are aware that they can use their national ID card to verify their identity online. Since 2017, this has provided the users of new Android smartphones with easy, fast and, above all, secure access to e-government services.

Starting today, another large group will be able to benefit from this option: the users of newer  iPhones. The “AusweisApp2”, for iOS version 13.1 and later is now available to the public, businesses and government authorities and can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple Store.

"Now almost all the latest smartphones can be used for easy and secure identification in e-government transactions and in the real world at government agencies. The high level of security of Germany’s ID card was successfully migrated to the smartphone,  making online identification more practical and convenient," emphasized Klaus Vitt, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community and Federal Government Commissioner for Information Technology.

Whether you wish to apply for a certificate of good conduct or a pension information statement, check the status of your application for child benefits, submit a petition to the Bundestag or look at your account in the traffic offenders’ database — you can now do so by iPhone from the comfort of your home and without having to get involved in time-consuming correspondence, let alone having to appear in person at the competent authority.
