"The United States is one of our key security partners"
Federal Interior Minister de Maizière visits Washington
Federal Interior Minister de Maizière is currently visiting Washington. In the framework of his visit he mets various government representatives for an exchange on current cooperation issues.
The U.S.A. is one of Germany’s key security partners.
"Almost all terrorist attacks that we have been able to prevent in Germany were thwarted due to the good cooperation with the Americans," said Minister de Maizière.
This is why a high level of continuity and the willingness to cooperate closely continue to be of critical importance to both sides also after the change in the U.S. administration. Minister de Maizière declared that there was both continuity and the willingness to cooperate, which was good news.
On Tuesday he met among others with John Kelly, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. The talks focused on counter-terrorism and also on aviation security, border security and cyber security.
De Maizière and Kelly declared that they planned to continue and strengthen the good and close cooperation between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior and its subordinate security agencies.
"We have agreed to fully continue our existing cooperation and have also explored new areas of cooperation including cyber security, which is an issue that concerns us very much on both sides of the Atlantic," said Minister de Maizière.
Yesterday, Minister de Maizière already met with Senator Ron Johnson at the Capitol in order to discuss current security issues.
Also on yesterday’s agenda was a meeting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The Attorney General and the Minister discussed among other things options for deleting illegal content from the Internet.
Cyber security and cyber defence in particular against attacks from abroad were also discussed at yesterday’s meeting with Thomas P. Bossert, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security.
Another central topic of the talks was the management of the refugee situation. Minister de Maizière provided background information and elaborated on the measures taken by the Federal Government. His U.S. counterparts were impressed with the way in which Germany dealt with the migration movement by bringing order, control and security to the system within a very short period of time.
On the Minister’s agenda for today is a meeting with the Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, an agency in the remit of the DHS.
