Points of contact for persons wishing to be naturalised
Article
Whom should you contact if you want to be naturalised?
The Länder (Federal States) authorities are responsible for naturalisation procedures for foreigners living in Germany. Which authority actually deals with naturalisation varies from state to state. The municipalities or county administrations (that is, the offices that deal with civil status and nationality matters) are responsible for most naturalisation procedures. These authorities may also refer the applicant to other responsible bodies when appropriate (eg, the city district government). The foreigners' office also may give initial information to persons wishing to be naturalised. In many cases, other public or private organisations offer counselling for immigrants.
The Federal Office of Administration in Cologne (Bundesverwaltungsamt) is responsible for the naturalisation of persons permanently living abroad. In these cases, local German diplomatic representation (embassy, consulate general or other consular body) may be contacted for initial information.
