International mobility has greatly increased in recent years. This trend has also had an impact on immigration to Germany. Many people have come to Germany from outside the EU to join family members, while others hope to find work or start a business here, and young people come to Germany to study or train for an occupation. Since 2009, the number of people seeking asylum in Germany has risen as well. Some of them are allowed to stay as recognized refugees or persons in need of protection.
