State symbols

Symbols of the state represent state sovereignty and authority. They have both practical and representative functions. They are also significant as an expression of a nation’s self-image. As such, they also help citizens identify with the state.
Our state symbols stand for the free democratic tradition of the Federal Republic of Germany. The most important symbols are the federal flag, the federal coat of arms and the national anthem. The national capital, national holidays, medals and official honours are all part of state symbolism too. The Domestic Protocol Office of the Federal Government is responsible for all matters related to the use of these symbols.
