The Constitutional Order

The Basic Law is the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the foundation on which the state is built. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community has lead responsibility for all issues related to the organisation of the state. For example, the Federal Ministry is entrusted with all tasks having to do with the Staatsvolk, or community of German citizens; with the national territory; and with symbols of the state.

The core of Germany’s constitutional order is our federal system, that is, the nation’s organisation as a federation made up of federal states and local governments. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community is responsible for issues related to coordination and the division of responsibilities. It is also responsible for other areas of law which are characteristic of our democratic system, such as law on assemblies and associations, as well as law on elections and political parties.
