The large majority of people in Germany belong to a Christian church or other religious communities, which indicate how important religious communities continue to be for individuals and for society as a whole.
Religious faith and its moral values offer orientation for actions by individuals as well as government and society. They also provide a strong motivation to volunteer for various causes and be involved in charitable organizations to help others.
Churches and religious communities therefore play a very important role in social policy. As a result, the Federal Government is very interested in a good working relationship with the churches and religious communities in Germany.
Within the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community is responsible for basic issues of constitutional law applicable to religious organizations and relations with churches and religious and ideological communities (all except for new religious and ideological movements and sects, for which the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth is responsible).
