International Building Exhibitions
Article Building & Housing
For more than a century, International Building Exhibitions have stood for innovation and experimentation.
International Building Exhibitions (IBA) are unique exhibitions of architecture and urban development for which Germany has gained international recognition. These exhibitions have been especially influential thanks to the excellent examples of building featured, such as the Weißenhofsiedlung of the IBA Stuttgart in 1927, the Hansaviertel of the IBA Berlin in 1957 and the Zeche Zollverein of the IBA Emscher Park in 1999.
Over the years, IBA have changed from exhibitions of architecture to exhibitions of building culture that increasingly focus on complex social, economic and ecological aspects as well as the quality of processes and participation, in addition to aesthetic and technological issues. The topics covered have become increasingly complex, and more and more communities have started using the IBA format, also outside Germany.
The quality campaign of the federal ministry responsible for building
IBA are not organized by the government, but the brand is closely associated with the federal ministry responsible for building, which supports formats important for the networks and quality of IBA, such as the "IBA meets IBA" network with its IBA forums (communication and public discussion of IBA topics), IBA labs (for exchange and knowledge transfer among IBA) and the Open IBA website.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community wants to ensure that IBA continue to be a successful exhibition format, which means that they must keep up a high standard of quality. For this reason, the Federal Ministry supports the current IBA with a quality campaign in close cooperation with the IBA Advisory Board of the BMI ,
IBA Advisory Board of the BMI
The IBA Advisory Board of the BMI critically monitors and advises the IBA and ensures that their developments, structures and orientation comply with the criteria of the IBA Memorandum. It also monitors the preparation of IBA initiatives. The IBA Advisory Board of the BMI was appointed by the federal ministry responsible for building.
