Architecture biennials are among the most prominent global platforms for presenting and discussing innovative trends in architecture and urban development, providing an opportunity to explore the discipline and its far-reaching impact on society. These events are a showcase for Baukultur, enabling participating countries to present their planning achievements to an international audience.
The Venice Biennale of Architecture is the best-known and most prestigious architecture exhibition in the world. It is held every two years. With funding from the budget of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, Germany regularly mounts exhibitions at the German Pavilion in the historic grounds of the Venice Giardini.
For each Biennale, a new team of curators is chosen at the recommendation of a selection committee, following an open competition for the best exhibition design, to take responsibility for Germany’s entry. The German entry for the 16th Architecture Biennale, which was held in Venice from 26 May to 25 November 2018, was curated by Graft Architekten and Marianne Birthler with the title “Unbuilding Walls”.
