100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019
The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, a central event in the development of modernism which is being celebrated in Germany and abroad.
The Bauhaus had a major impact on Baukultur in Germany, and its students influenced planning and building all over the world. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community is responsible for the necessary structural refurbishment of the Bauhaus institutions: the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin; for two new Bauhaus museums and the new Bauhaus archive.
There is a great deal of research into the history of the Bauhaus, which continues to influence the training of planning and building today. The Bauhaus raised issues which can be regarded as preparing the way for contemporary discussions of Baukultur.

Making Futures Bauhaus+
Using planning and design, the Bauhaus sought new answers to social questions of the future. The action research project “Making Futures Bauhaus+”, led by Professor Bader of the Berlin University of the Arts, seeks to transfer this idea to the present day, with funding from the federal ministry responsible for building.
With plug-ins, mobile workshops and other innovative formats, the project addressed questions of architecture as a collective form, architecture as a resource, and architectural practice in collaboration with students, graduates and interested members of the public. One highlight of the project: the international summer camp "Caring School for Disruptive Architecture” was held in Berlin from 30 August to 15 September 2019, where participants tried out and discussed new approaches to architecture and urban design by focusing on specific buildings, including the camp venue, the Haus der Statistik at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz.
Following the interdisciplinary approach pursued by the Bauhaus, the federal ministry responsible for building is funding a project of the Bundesjazzorchester, Germany’s national youth jazz orchestra. Young jazz musicians from Germany and Israel have rehearsed new music written to accompany silent films by Bauhaus members. They first performed the pieces together in late June, at concerts in Tel Aviv’s White City, in cooperation with the White City Center, and at Berlin’s Jewish Museum. Additional concerts in New York and Chicago in July 2019 were sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office, and concerts in Mannheim and Leipzig in late November will round out the project.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community also sponsored the University of Mainz project “Spring School Tel Aviv – Dessau”. University students addressed the shared Bauhaus heritage in Dessau and Tel Aviv and developed ideas for the further use and construction of Bauhaus buildings. The results of the project will be presented in a publication and an exhibition at the participating universities starting in October 2019.
