The importance of the construction sector

type: Article , Topic: Building & Housing

The German building trade has a long tradition and a promising future. The construction industry is a key sector of the German domestic economy and is also one of the largest branches of economic activity in Germany and Europe.

In 2019, Germany’s construction industry generated an output of roughly €430 billion; approximately 2 million people had a job in the construction industry proper and in building completion work. The construction industry is extremely important in terms of economic and employment policy, because it is closely interconnected with numerous other industries.

Quality

The future of Germany’s construction industry depends on the quality of planning and construction. The Federal Government places a strong emphasis on a healthy Mittelstand (the sector of small and medium-sized firms) which is in a position to build efficiently and sustainably, to high quality, modern standards.

The market has evolved in recent years. Quality is increasingly demanded over quantity. The construction industry must adapt, becoming an innovator in social, technical and economic terms while also ensuring that we can meet our international climate commitments. If it is to achieve this, greater market transparency and improved cooperation throughout the construction value chain, from the construction machinery and construction products industries through design and planning professionals, to the export industry and facility management companies, are essential.

Economic aspects

Building policy is inseparable from economic policy. Building services that are “made in Germany” need to increase their profile on both domestic and international markets, and we must keep creating demand for them. The key to quality is in the training and constant upskilling of employees. Our building policy aims to secure high levels of investment, to fast-track targeted investments, and to provide effective support to quality development, competent service provision and innovation in products and processes.
