The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community is responsible for public building law, the construction sector, the construction industry and federal buildings, among other things. The construction industry is a key sector of the German domestic economy. Issues related to climate change and the energy efficiency of buildings and neighbourhoods are an important challenge for the housing sector and for housing and building policy, given that buildings currently account for approximately 35% of Germany’s final energy consumption. Furthermore, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community is responsible for planning and constructing civilian federal buildings both within Germany and abroad. The brochure provided by Directorate-General BW (Building, Construction Industry and Federal Buildings) gives a short overview of the tasks covered by the Directorate-General and topics such as the research initiative “Zukunft Bau” and the “Museum der 1000 Orte”, a virtual museum presenting works of art that are on display at or in public buildings.
