Election and party law

"All state authority is derived from the people" – this is how the Basic Law defines the principle of democracy. In a representative democracy, the people exercise state authority through elections.

Voting rights

The right of citizens to vote is a cornerstone of democracy. The right to free elections ensures that the sovereignty of the people is upheld. The right to vote is a political right. It also encompasses the right to stand for election. In modern democracies, citizens with the right to vote usually also have the right to stand for election, but in certain cases there may be additional requirements to become a candidate for election.
