Citizenship assigns a person to a certain country, including all rights and duties. A citizen is therefore a person belonging to a certain country.

Information on the naturalization test

The Ordinance on Naturalization Tests issued by the Federal Minister of the Interior on 5 August 2008 entered into force on 1 September 2008 and introduces the nationally standardized naturalization test (Einbürgerungstest).

The test is intended to check immigrants’ knowledge of Germany’s legal system, society and way of life, which is required to become a naturalized citizen. People who are below the age of 16 or cannot fulfil the requirements because they are impaired due to illness, disability or age are exempted from the test.

A sample test can be taken in the online testing centre. If you have answered all questions, an evaluation will show you which questions you answered correctly. Then you can read through the correct answers including brief background information.
You may also answer an interactive list of questions online. After answering each question, the correct answer will be displayed. The test consists of 310 questions including 300 general questions and 10 questions which apply only to a specific federal state.
