1991 Abitur (higher-education entrance qualification) at Wolfgang-Borchert-Gymnasium, Halstenbek

July 1991–September 1992 military service with the German air force; 1992–1997 studied law at the University of Hamburg; first state examination in law; 1998–1999 studied international commercial law at Stellenbosch University, South Africa; December 1998 received Master of Laws degree; July 2000 received doctoral degree in law; 1999–October 2001 practical legal training for post-graduate lawyers and second state examination, followed by legal practice.

Member of the German Bundestag since 2002.

May 2005–September 2007 deputy chair of the parliamentarians from the state of Schleswig-Holstein; chair of the parliamentarians from the state of Schleswig-Holstein since October 2007.

1994–1998 member of the Rellingen local council. Member of the CDU executive board of the state of Schleswig-Holstein since 2002. Chair of the CDU party organization for the Pinneberg district since 2005. Member of the Deutsch-Südafrikanische Juristenvereinigung e.V.
